Electrician Exams

This will be where I am keeping free Electrician Apprenticeship exams so that I don’t have to keep track of bookmarks or anything like that. This is the real purpose of having a website, not for money, but to have a superior note taking app you can build entirely yourself, like obsidian but actually useful. (I haven’t vetted entirely all these resources yet, I will remove those that are farces)

Free study guide from the Electrical Training Alliance

People are saying there a lot more mechanics and physics questions such as gear ratios and fulcrum points on the test versus raw algebra, not certain to be honest, probably best to call my local chapter and ask them if they have a study guide or something for their test. I think the entrance exam itself costs 50$ I wonder if you are able to apply to other chapters if you are turned down by the one you apply too.

Here is a comment from reddit:

Local 134 apprentice here, the test is separated into 5 timed parts. (I do not remember how much time each, but the test takes about 2 1/2 – 3 hours) 1.) there is a mechanical reasoning portion (for example. which way the water flows, or which wheel on the train is moving faster around the corner) 2.) numerical reasoning, meaning number series, like which number comes next in the pattern 3.) there is a reading portion, like 15 paragraphs or something with 3 questions about each paragraph. 4.) There is a basic algebra portion, can’t really explain it 5.) and finally there is paper folding, theres diagrams showing a paper being folded, then there’s a “hole” in it and you have to figure out where the holes will be when it’s all unfolded. The entire test is multiple choice. However, just because you did on the test, doesn’t mean you’re getting in. Military experience, non union electrical work hours (with a w-2 or paystub as proof), as well as the trainee program, or other programs that are involved in local 134, can heavily boost your chances of getting in. The odds of getting in on your first test are slim to none, they want to see commitment. I know people who have taken the test 7 times and more, I know some people that have taken it twice. At the end of the day you need the experience, if this is your first attempt, find a non union contractor and get a job with them for work experience. Or if you know a 134 contractor, reach out to them about the trainee program, they might be able to pull a string and help you get in. But just don’t give up.

The IBEW aptitude test is split into two timed sections.

The first section is Algebra and Functions. You will have 46 minutes to answer 33 questions. Topics include:

  • Plugging in and solving for Complex Polynomials
  • Quadratics
  • Number series
  • Analyzing functions

Calculators are NOT allowed on the test.

The second section is reading comprehension. You will have 51 minutes to answer 36 questions. There are a series of passages, each with a certain amount of questions about said passages. Topics include:

  • Analyzing Texts
  • Identifying the main idea

The biggest difficulty reported is usually the time restraints. If you don’t know the content well, time will be your biggest enemy.
